Rekey when the hardware is good and you only need old keys to no longer work. Replace when the lock is worn, outdated, or you want a different grade. Either way, do one of them the week you move in.
Why it matters
Previous tenants, their roommates, contractors, dog walkers, and the last owner have all held a key to your door at some point. Nobody collected them all. Until the lock is rekeyed or changed, every one of those keys still works.
What a rekey does
The locksmith removes the cylinder, swaps the pin stack inside it to match a new key, and puts it back. The lock on the door looks identical. Old keys no longer turn it. Every cylinder in the home can be set to the same new key.
- Keeps the existing hardware
- Done at the door
- Front door, back door, and gate can be keyed alike
What a replacement does
The whole lock comes off and a new one goes on. That is the right call when the lock is sticking, rusted, a cheap builder grade, or when you want a keypad, a smart lock, or a restricted high-security cylinder.
- New hardware, new keys, new look
- Chance to upgrade the strike and reinforce the frame
- Opens the door to keypad and smart options
A short decision path
- Does the key turn smoothly and the bolt throw fully? If not, replace.
- Is the lock a decent deadbolt or mortise lock in good shape? If yes, rekey.
- Do you want codes or an app instead of keys? Replace with a keypad or smart lock.
- Do you want to control who can copy the key? Replace the cylinder with a restricted one.
Renters
Most leases allow a rekey as long as the landlord gets a copy of the new key. Ask first, then have the locksmith cut that copy on the visit.
Common questions
Can I rekey to match the key I already use for another door?
Often yes, if both locks share a keyway. The locksmith checks before starting.
How many keys do I get?
As many as you ask for. Copies are cut at the visit.
Is this a mobile service?
Yes. There is no storefront. The locksmith comes to your address in Williamsburg or anywhere in New York City.
